and spiritual and emotional abuse is a difficult and painful endeavor. The

all affiliated authoritarian splinter groups in their research, critical thinking,
healing and understanding. While authors are respected in their field, opinions

life. This book speaks to those who were damaged emotionally and spiritually
by such groups.
Churches That Abuse by Ronald Enroth

with abusive styles, creating emotional and spiritual perils for their adherents.
Contains many real life stories of abuse; covers ten characteristics of churches
that abuse.

confusion, restoring relationships, regaining independence and making other
life adjustments, coping with disorientation, returning to reality, and renewing
a wholesome personal relationship with God. Includes real life stories.

works. Some chapters are: "The Threat: Mind Control Cults Today"; "Understanding
Mind Control"; "Cult Psychology"; "Exit Counseling: Freedom Without Coercion";
"How to Help"; "Unlocking Cult Mind Control"; "Strategies for Recovery." (Themes
of cult membership, discussed in chap. 5 of the book, are
listed on our site.)
Releasing the Bonds - Empowering People to Think for Themselves by
Steven Hassan
Describes a new approach for those who are motivated to help a loved one leave
a destructive group. It covers: Understanding
the principles of destructive mind control; developing effective patterns
of communications with the cult member; studying cult beliefs and tactics;
unlocking cult-induced phobias; conducting mini-interactions, etc.
Cults in Our Midst: The Continuing Fight Against Their Hidden Menace
by Margaret Thaler Singer
Cults are defined as organizations that feature "coordinated programs of coercive
influence and behavioral control. Their dangers are enumerated, particularly
the attack on the sense of self; analyzes the leaders' techniques (almost
all these groups are authoritarian), including isolation from family and friends,
trance induction, guided imagery; indirect suggestion. Practical advice on
helping survivors escape and recover.
Recovery from Cults: Help for Victims of Psychological and Spiritual Abuse,
Edited by Michael D. Langone
Drawing upon the clinical expertise of professionals and the personal experiences
of those formerly involved in high-intensity mind-control groups, this book
is a comprehensive guide. Provides practical guidelines for helping former
cult members manage the problems they encounter when leaving cults. Section
I: Mind Control; Section II: Leaving Cults; Section III: Facilitating Recovery;
Section IV: Special Issues.
Damaged Disciples: Causalities of Authoritarian Churches & The Shepherding
Movement by Ron & Vicki Burks
The repressive relationships and the pattern of giving up personal autonomy
to a pastor/leader can result in a loss of identity and self-confidence. The
result for the authors was
near total destruction of their personalities after being caught up in a charismatic,
discipling church. This is the story of their struggle to break free and rebuild
their lives and the journey back to faith and wholeness.
(Out of print; available

Trauma and Recovery by Judith Lewis Herman, M.D.
This book is very useful for those who were traumatized by cult abuse and
suffered complex post traumatic
stress disorder. Part I: Traumatic Disorders; Part II: Stages of Recovery
(chap. 7 covers the therapeutic relationship)
The Emotionally Abused Woman: Overcoming Destructive Patterns and Reclaiming
Yourself by Beverly Engel
Recognize and understand the abusers in your life; identify the patterns that
have kept you emotionally trapped; break the cycle of abuse and open yourself
to the promise of healthy relationships.
Battle for the Mind: A Physiology of Conversion and Brainwashing by
William Sargant
Definitive work that spells out and illustrates the basic techniques used
by evangelists, psychiatrists, and brain-washers to disperse the patterns
of belief and behavior already established in the minds of their hearers,
and to substitute new patterns for them.
Scripture Twisting: 20 Ways the Cults Misread the Bible by James W.
Sire
Twenty separate kinds of reading errors are isolated, which are characteristically
made by cultists as they interpret the Bible. Sire also handles twisted translation,
overspecification, virtue by association, ignoring the context and other subjects.
When Prophecy Fails (A Social & Psychological Study of a Modern Group That
Predicted the Destruction of the World) by Leon Festinger,
Henry W. Riecken and Stanley Schachter
Snapping: America's Epidemic of Sudden Personality Change by Flo Conway
& Jim Siegelman
Valuable study, examining how mind-altering practices change the brain's information
processing system. Intriguing examples of cult extremes. The authors state
that snapping is a phenomenon that occurs when an individual stops thinking
and feeling for himself.
Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism by Robert Jay Lifton,
M.D.
Of particular interest is chapter 22, which lists
Lifton's eight themes that constitute
thought reform or a mind control program. These criteria have become the
standard by which to determine whether mind control is present in a group.
Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert B. Cialdini, Ph.D.
Cialdini illustrates that anyone who understands how natural human behavior
patterns work can exploit others. Contains practical advice on how to think
critically about many everyday situations, including cult recruiting.
Without Conscience: The disturbing world of the psychopaths among us
by Dr. Robert D. Hare
If you want to know what makes many cult leaders tick, this is the book to
read. It is a fascinating journey into the minds of dangerous individuals,
many of whom live on the edge, never feel guilt, act cold and distant one
moment and intensely emotional the next, lack empathy, and scheme their way
into money, power and relationships.
Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
Classic book about the effects of totalitarianism;
describes a world ruled by a power structure that controls not only information
but also individual thought and memory.
Teaches vital lessons about the subtly
of propaganda and manipulation and how those unaware of the tactics, or trusting
in the authority, are often lead astray by the exploiters.
The Faith Healers by James Randi
The author, a professional magician, exposes the fraudulent televangelists
that prey on despairing people. On the basis of the author's three year-investigation
into faith healers, he suggests it may be nothing more than a religious con
game. Many examples.

Herbert Armstrong / Worldwide Church of God:
Important reading for
anyone researching HWA and WCG (or for exiters from any of the WCG splinter
groups)
Broadway
To Armageddon by William B. Hinson, 1977
Hinson, a former WCG minister exposes a system of bondage that enslaves the
minds and bodies of its members. "Herbert W. Armstrong has destroyed more
lives than anyone I know in the name of religion in such a short period of
time. The Armstrong work is a work of darkness and Christians are called upon
to reveal the work of darkness." (Hinson, p. 10) Hinson writes with love and
experience and with hope that others will be miraculously delivered by God
from this bondage.

(An Expose of the Armstrong Modus Operandi) by Marion J. McNair, 1977

to replace the spirit of fear and tyranny with that of true Christian Liberty."
Chapters 2 and 3 give an analyses of Herbert Armstrong's co-worker letters,
revealing the propaganda methods he used in order to solicit donors and then
con them out of thousands of dollars. Also covers his many false prophecies
and the decay and decline of his empire.

Herbert Armstrong's Tangled Web
(An Insider's View of the Worldwide Church of God) by David Robinson,
1980
An insider's view of the strife-torn Worldwide Church of God. What is Herbert
Armstrong's real power base? Is he really backed by God as he claims? Or,
like the Wizard of Oz, is he operating on image? The author writes from firsthand
knowledge with deep disappointment and has come to agree with Solomon who
advised against putting trust in men.

Attack on
the Bible by John R. Rice
LIFE magazine, on December 25, 1964, tried to prove that the Bible was not

lacking humility, scholarship, documentation and common honesty. This small,
