Upon
a life I did not live,
Upon a death I did not die,
Upon Another's life, Another's death,
I stake my whole eternity.
Not
on the tears which I have shed,
Not on the sorrows I have known,
Another's tears, Another's griefs,
On them I rest, on them alone.
Not
what these hands have done
Can save the guilty soul;
Not what this toiling flesh has borne
Can make the spirit whole.
Thy
blood alone, Lord Jesus,
Can cleanse my soul from sin;
Thy Word alone, O Lamb of God,
Can give me peace within!
